How to Reset a Tire Pressure Light

Tire Pressure Warning Light_216248072

If you have recently inflated your tires to the proper level, but your TPMS indicator is still illuminated on your dashboard, you may need to reset it. Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is critical to the safety of your vehicle, so it is important that it works correctly at all times when you are out and about in Omaha. Learn how to reset a tire pressure light in the guide below, and if you are still experiencing issues with the TPMS, reach out to the service center at Sid Dillon Nissan, and we can diagnose and fix the problem.

Resetting Your Tire Pressure Light in 4 Simple Steps

Usually, the TPMS warning light will shut off once your tires are inflated to the recommended level. However, there may be times when that is not the case. If so, there are a few steps you can take.

  • Drive at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes to reset the sensor. The next time you start the car, it should reset.
  • With the vehicle off, turn the key to the “On” position. Do not start the car, though. Hold the TPMS reset button until the tire pressure light blinks three times, then release it. Start the car and give the sensor 20 minutes to refresh. For most vehicles, the tire pressure monitor reset button is located under the steering wheel. If you are not sure of its location, consult your owner’s manual.
  • Inflate all tires to 3 PSI over their recommended amount, then deflate them completely. Don’t forget about the spare tire, as it may also have a sensor. Once each tire is deflated, reinflate each one to the correct level once again.
  • With the vehicle off, use a wrench to disconnect the positive battery cable. Turn the car on and honk the horn for approximately three seconds. This will discharge any power that is still stored in the vehicle. After that, connect the battery again.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Tire pressure sensors often use a battery, so if the light is flashing, it may be letting you know that the battery is in need of replacement. However, it can also be alerting you to a problem with one of the sensors. If this is the case, make your way to our service center near Beatrice. Our team can find out what’s causing the problem and get your vehicle back on the roads of Kearny in no time.
