How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

Tire in the Rain

Over time, your vehicle’s tires will wear down with more and more use. While your tires won’t last forever, there are still plenty of things you can do to extend your tires’ lifespan for as long as possible. Learn how to make your tires last longer with the service team at Sid Dillon Nissan. We’ll show you how to get long-life tires, so you can continue to roll smoothly on the Omaha roads for a long time. Then, visit our service center when you need to have your tires changed, replaced, or serviced in any kind of way.

Different Tire Tread Patterns & Their Meaning

As you drive more and more, your tires will wear down, but they can wear down in many different ways. Here are some of the different ways that tire tread can wear down and what the causes may be:

  • Cupping Wear: This wear happens in a diagonal scalloping, and it usually indicates that there’s an issue with the suspension system.
  • Patchy Wear: If your tires are wearing out in uneven patches, then this is usually because they are out of balance.
  • Inner & Outer Tread Wear: This is also called “toe wear” or “camber wear”, and it consists of excess wear on the inner or outer part of the tire. It’s usually caused by misaligned tires.
  • Center Wear: If your tires are wearing in the center, then they may be overinflated.
  • Edge Wear: If you see edge wear, then it usually means that your tires are underinflated.

If you see any of these problems on your tires, then schedule service with Sid Dillon Nissan near Beatrice.

Long-Life Tire Tips

Now that you know about some of the common tire tread patterns and what they mean, you’ll be better prepared for when it comes time to change your tire. Before you have to change your tires, be sure you get the most out of them. Here’s how to make your tires last longer in between changes:

  • Balance Your Tires: Uneven weight distribution among your tires can also contribute to uneven wear, so you’ll want to be sure have them balanced if need be.
  • Check Your Vehicle Alignment Twice a Year: Misaligned tires can wear out much faster than aligned tires. You’ll usually be able to tell if your tires are misaligned by a shaky steering wheel.
  • Check Your Tire Pressure Once a Month: Keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure levels with your vehicle’s TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system). Tires can lose up to a pound per square inch of air pressure a month, and they can lose even more in the winter.
  • Have a Tire Rotation Every 5,000 Miles: Your vehicle’s tires won’t wear down evenly since power is always directed to one side of the vehicle at different times. Having your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles can help evenly distribute the tread wear and help them last longer.

How Long Does a Spare Tire Last?

If you need to use your spare tire on the Kearny roads, then you should keep in mind that spare tires aren’t meant to be driven around for the long haul and are only a temporary way for you to get to a service center or somewhere else. How long you can expect your spare tire to last will depend on the type you’re driving on. Here are the different types of spare tires and how long they last:

  • Full-Size Spare Tire: You can drive safely with this tire, but it’s more than likely not the same type of tire as your regular tires, so just be sure to have it changed as soon as possible.
  • Space Saver / “Donut” Spare Tire: You shouldn’t drive more than 70 miles with this tire, and you’ll want to stay under 50 mph.
  • Run-Flat Spare Tire: Some tires are designed to drive on even after they’re punctured. If you have a run-flat spare tire, then you can drive about 50 miles after it’s been damaged.
